1998 was the year that the WARL celebrated its 50th Anniversary. The inaugural season of the newly formed National Rugby League (NRL). The 1st professional rugby league club in Victoria- Melbourne Storm & the Western Reds Rugby League Club was closed down.

Foundation Club Mosman Cottesloe which won premierships in 1955, 1979, and 1981, sadly closes its doors, after 52 years in the WARL. Canning Bulldogs beat North Beach 22-16 in Grand Final

Applecross-Mt Pleasant RLC closes doors after playing third grade since 1998. The club had entered the junior and senior competition in 1948. North Beach win Premiership.

Rockingham Coastal Sharks RLC debut in the Perth First grade Competition. South Perth wins First grade Premiership against North Beach 33-22. Western Australia won the Affiliated States tournament and played Queensland residents
